Countries and communities

Areas are regions that group places and events. They come in two kinds: countries and communities (for example a city or a local bitcoin group). The map shows the one country and the communities for the area you are looking at as chips above the filter chips.

The area page

An area page brings together everything about that region:

• A header image and the area’s name.
• A description, with a Read more control when it is long.
• A website link.
• Upcoming events in the area. Tapping one opens the event screen .
• Issues — places whose OpenStreetMap data needs attention, such as an outdated verification or a missing icon. Tapping an issue opens that element in the OpenStreetMap editor, and the How to help? link explains what is involved.
• A Save action to bookmark the area. This requires an account; saved areas are listed in your profile. See Accounts and saved items .
• An offline map option to download the area’s map tiles. See Offline maps .

Offline behaviour

Areas are stored on your device, so area chips, area pages and the events shown on them work offline. Only the map imagery itself needs to be downloaded separately if you want it available without a connection.
